In an age where health care is in transition, it's comforting to know that REIKI is a steady healing presence which is immediately available to all of us.
 
REIKI is a balancing/healing system of incomparable ease and power. Reiki is a part of every one of us. It was once universal and was never meant to be lost. There are many books about Reiki - and even more websites to search on this subject. Great!
 
First of all - Reiki IS NOT  a massage. The healing/balancing energy is BEAMED towards the receiving person/animal/object/event.
The Reiki Practitioner acts as a conduit for the high frequency energy to go through - and the person receiving needs to raise his/her vibration to match the frequency for the self healing to manifest.
We can raise our frequency by changing our thoughts to positive, life affirming.
 
The act of laying hands on the human or animal body to comfort and relieve pain is as old as instinct. When experiencing pain the first thing most people do is to put their hands on it.
A mother's instinct when a child is feverish or ill directs her to place her hands on the baby's forehead. Human touch conveys caring and love.
The living body, human or animal, radiates warmth and energy. This energy is the life force itself, and has as many names as there are human civilizations: MANA (Polynesian Hunas), ORENDA (Native American Iroquois), PRANA (India), RUACH (Hebrew), BARRAKA (Islamic cultures), CH'i (China), Ki (Japan), Holly Ghost (Christianity), Animal Magnetism (F.A.Mesmer) - well, you get the idea.
In the life force energy of REIKI, the person who is attuned as a Reiki healer has had her body's energy channels opened and cleared of obstructions by the Reiki attunements. She/he now not only receives an increase in this life energy or Ki for her/his own healing(balancing), but becomes connected to the source of all universal Ch'i or Ki.
This source can be described in any way the healer chooses to name it. I call it Universal Source of All That Is. Other terms might be God/Goddess, the Higher Self, the First Source, the Universe, or whatever termed primary creation or life energy.
REKI IS NOT a religion or affiliated with any religion. This life force energy is the source of life itself and far older in concept and fact than any religious philosophy.

While everything that has life has Ki, a Reiki attunement connects the receiver in an increased way to its limitless source. Upon receiving the first attunement in Reiki I, the receiver becomes a channel for this universal healing energy. From the time of the attunement and through the rest of her/his life, all is needed to connect with healing energy /Ki/ is for the attuned person to place her
 hands upon herself or someone else and it will flow through her automatically.
The attunement, by placing the person in direct contact with the source of Ki, also increases the life force energy of the person who has received it. She experiences an energy that first heals/balances her, and then also heals/balances others without depleting her. In the few short minutes of the attunement process, the receiver of Reiki energy is given a gift that forever changes her/his life in every positive way.
The process of attunement or initiation is what sets Reiki apart from every other form of laying on of hands or touch healing. The attunement is not a healing session, it creates the healer.
In Reiki I, the student receives the first combined attunement (4 attunements if she/he takes the class from a Traditional Reiki Master). The student receives additional attunement in Reiki II, and one more attunement in Reiki III. Each degree's attunements increase the positive power of the student's ability to channel Ki. It is attunements themselves that are Reiki, and without this process - which must be passed directly from Teacher/Master to student - the healing system is not Reiki but something else.
I was taught in traditional Usui Shiki Reiki Ryoho way, very strict - in an atmosphere of almost secrecy - all Reiki symbols had to be memorized; there was no manual and costs of attunements were very high. 
Everything is changing - and I am very happy to agree with those who offer no secrecy but rather whole explanation and availability. The more of us - the better for the Humanity - better energy around, charged positively with understanding that preventing is far greater than treating.
 
Another thing I LOVE about Reiki is the absence of EGO! You are only a channel of this great life force, filled with Unconditional Love, which with a great wisdom goes where needed. You don't take a credit for any healing - we are all our own healers! What you do as a healer (and that's why I prefer word BALANCING than healing) - is that you provide an opportunity for a power much greater than our understanding of IT to come through.
My journey will hopefully never end. My understanding of what LIFE means to me - evolves with every Reiki session, with every moment in my life.
No sessions are alike - even for the same person. You cannot take my word for it - experience it for yourself. Give yourself REIKI, it's your birthright! And once you learn - share with others. Together, we are creating  Heaven on Earth - filled with LOVE, JOY, GRATITUDE, KINDNESS, CREATIVITY, ABUNDANCE, GROWTH....
